Sesa Goa (up 5.97%), Nalco (up 4.92%), Hindustan Zinc (up 3.78%), Sail (up 3.77%), Sterlite Industries (up 2.99%), Bhushan Steel (up 2.72%), Tata Steel (up 1.97%), NMDC (up 1.06%), Hindalco Industries (up 0.92%) and Coal India (up 0.70%), edged higher.

The BSE Metal index was up 1.63% at 11,547.05. It underperformed the Sensex, which was up 0.44% at 17,152.98.

The BSE Metal index had outperformed the market over the past one month until 25 January 2012, gaining 19.20% compared with the Sensex's 8.50% rise. The index had also outperformed the market in past one quarter, rising 0.04% as against 1.03% fall in the Sensex.
